San Diego Dance Theater's artisticChoreographers Prize director, Jean Isaacs and a panel experts have selected 11 young choreographers out of 46 submissions to present newly created dance works in a competition for a $2,500 prize. A panel of local dance and art patrons and enthusiasts, along with audience participation, will select a winning dance and the choreographer that will take home this generously donated gift from Danah Fayman, a long time supporter of local dance.

"I thought this was a great idea when Jean told me about it," said Danah Fayman. "I hope it speaks to the next generation and inspires them to think creatively. It would be wonderful to continue this annually."

Eligibility requirements included:

  • Choreographers must be between the ages of 18 and 40.
  • The dance must be a San Diego premiere.
  • Choreographer must be San Diego County resident or have a history in the San Diego dance community.

Many of the selected choreographers, ranging from ages 22 to 36, have completed their degrees in dance and are working with local companies including Malashock Dance, Eveoke Dance, and San Diego Dance Theater. Others are teaching and some have created their own dance companies that produce performances throughout San Diego.

The choreographers selected to complete include:

  • Trixi Agiao & Arthur Huang
  • Blythe Barton
  • Deven Brawley & Keely Campbell
  • Matt Carney
  • Anthony Diaz
  • Rande Dorn
  • Daniel Marshall
  • Gina Bolles Sorensen
  • Khamla Somphanh
  • Anthony Rodriguez
  • Sadie Weinberg

"I was gratified that there are so many young dance makers in our community," said Jean Isaacs, who has had a career of supporting and educating young dancers. "There is often a gap after a student completes a college program and many are not sure what to do next. We hope this helps provide direction and inspiration."

The panel of judges includes:

  • Danah Fayman, Arts Patron
  • Wendy Rodgers, Guggenheim Fellow and Professor of Dance at UC Riverside
  • Kris Eitland, Prize-winning Online Dance Critic
